We open on two police officers, Joanna and Greg, travelling in Joanna's Car. They are going to a council estate to pick up a 'perp', Diana Frederickson. While not revealing her crime, Joanna is notified that Diana may be "carrying", and reminds Greg to be careful. Greg is already wearing a stab-proof vest, indicating this may be more violent than expected.
On entering Diana's apartment, they find her amidst boxes of mouldy food, dusty shelves and unclean crockery. On further questioning, Diana's attempts to subvert the police officers fails and she is found to be pregnant. Despite an impassioned plea to Joanna, insisting minimum wage doesn't pay the £24,000 the birth licence demands, she is still arrested and brought in for "processing".
Arriving at the clinic, the situation becomes clear. She's being forced into a procedure to remove her baby. She attempts to escape, but fails, and is put out via anaesthetic to ensure she can no longer fight the procedure. Our two cops wait on her, making sure the operation is successful before they can return home. Upon awaking, Diana realises her baby is gone and wails inconsolably, her baby is gone and there is nothing she can do to bring it back.
The two cops try to relax off the night's bad karma in a cafe. Greg senses the atmosphere has become awkward, Joanna simply staring into space. On trying to raise a conversation, Greg misses the point wildly and ignites a debate between the two over the previous night's events. Greg believes they acted appropriately, Joanna is beginning to question her choices in this job role. After Greg cracks an inappropriate joke in an attempt to lighten the mood, Joanna has heard enough and leaves him at the cafe - telling him to consider their sexual exploits a few nights prior as their "last time".
The next morning Joanna finishes her shower and walks into her main apartment room, drying her hair with a towel. As she enters, a hologram displays that she has just been paid and the estimated annual income of £23,600. The sound of a drone suddenly fill the soundstage and a delivery drone arrives on her balcony, dropping off a parcel and photographing her as proof of delivery. It then flies away, leaving Joanna to open the parcel alone. Inside is a packet of 'morning after' tablets to let her lose the baby she didn't know she was pregnant with. Knowing this will be her only chance at a child, with her endometriosis likely to take her remaining ovary soon, she knows that she needs a pay rise in order to keep the child.
